History

The Brodleians Association

Past and present pupils of Hipperholme Grammar School are affectionately known as 'Brodleians' in honour of Matthew Broadley, at one-time paymaster to King Charles I, who in 1648 endowed £500 to build a school on land donated by Samuel Sunderland, of the nearby Coley Hall.

In 1930 former pupils of the Grammar School founded 'Old Brodleians RUFC' who now play just up from us along Denholme Gate Road. Even today many former pupils turn out for the club on a regular basis, while our sixth form team compete against the club, but also receive coaching lessons from squad members.

Away from sport, notable Brodleians include:
Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), former Prime Minister and founder of the modern police force
Laurence Sterne, (1713-1768), 18th century author and satirist
Sir Donald Thompson (1931-2005), former Conservative MP for Calder Valley
Paddy Tipping, (1949-), Labour MP for Sherwood, Notts
Danny (1970-) and Richard McNamara (1972-) of Embrace
Richard Alexander (1970-) television presenter and producer.

School Reunion: Saturday 4 July from 7.00pm

The school is holding a Brodleian Reunion, which will be an informal gathering, starting at 7.00pm. It will be an ideal occasion to catch up with old friends and acquaintances as well as looking round the School.

The reunion will coincide with our Young Artists and Designers Exhibition featuring art and design work from all the pupils in the School.

We hope as many Brodleians as possible will attend the 4th July Reunion.  Please encourage any Brodleians you know to attend. There will be light refreshments and a bar will be available.  e look forward to meeting you on 4th July. For further information please contact the School on 01422 202256.

We would be delighted to hear from you, and to keep you informed of current school activities.
