Physical Education
Physical education helps pupils gain expertise in their skills and techniques, and helps them understand what makes a performance effective.
It also helps them learn to take the initiative and make decisions about what to do to improve themselves both on and off the field.
Aims
The Physical Education Curriculum has been developed to encourage the fostering of positive attitudes towards health and exercise. Participation and enjoyment as well as providing opportunities to excel are paramount in our aims and these are encouraged through providing a well balanced widely based core-curriculum, supplemented by an extensive extra-curricular programme.
Throughout its history the department has developed and run successful rugby union, hockey, netball, cricket, athletic, football and basketball teams. Gymnastic and cheerleading clubs are also well attended and members all contribute significantly to our bi-annual evening of gymnastics and dance. We also enter into other exciting regional and national competitions in activities such as swimming, karting and dodgeball
GCSE
The popularity of GCSE Physical Education reflects the importance and value of the subject within the school. It also enables pupils with potential in this area to pursue excellence in their sporting activities.
Students study the anatomical, physiological and sociological aspects which affect performance along with gaining a basic knowledge of first aid. Students particularly enjoy designing and participating in a six-week training programme for a sport of their choice.
6th Form
A and AS levels in physical education further extend studies in this field. Pupils follow the AQA Syllabus, that constitutes critical analysis of performance, through psychology, physiology and the cultural and historical influences.
It is a natural progression from GCSE and facilitates further study in areas such as sports science, physiotherapy, careers within the leisure industry, teaching or coaching.
A-level PE is now even more exciting since students have the opportunity to become qualified coaches and officials in the sport of their choice.
In addition provision is also made for 6th formers to follow the Community Sports Leadership Award - a nationally recognised qualification that aims to encourage leadership amongst young people.
