More trophies than any other school awarded to Hipperholme’s Cheer Squad!»
30/06/2010

Hipperholme Grammar School’s Cheerleading Squad, the Hip Hotshots, were cheering yet again on Sunday 27th June, as they wowed judges of the British Cheerleading Championships and brought home the most trophies awarded to any school taking part in the competition.

The girls proudly carried four trophies away from the prestigious championships, held at the Manchester Velodrome.

British Street Cheer Champions  -  Year 9

The girls competed in age groups under three categories: Street Cheer, Pom Dance, and Street Tumble.  Hipperholme Grammar School Key Stage 3 girls (11-14) became the National Street Cheer Champions and the girls were also ranked an impressive fourth place in the Pom Dance category.  The school’s Key Stage 4 team were the most consistent in the whole competition, scooping second place in all three events.

Key Stage 4 second place champs!

Mark Hendry, Head of PE said “Yet again we are immensely proud of the girls’ achievements.  Cheerleading is a relatively new activity at the school and yet, in a short period of time, the girls have become National Club Champions and now they are National Schools champions. This is fantastic.  It shows just how much talent and determination the girls have.  Praise must also go to coach, Dawn Wright, who has produced 2 national champion teams, 3 second place Teams,  a 4th and a 5th placed team, all in one year. An impressive feat for our small school.”

Years 7 and 8 squad, awarded 4th place in Pom Dance

Since the school introduced cheerleading 18 months ago, the teams have won many awards:
In October 2009, the girls entered the National Secondary School Street Cheer Championships which saw them crowned British Champions of Street Cheer!
Last month, the Key Stage 4 (14-16) cheerleaders entered the British Cheerleading Club Championships and were awarded 2nd place in the Under 16s Pom Dance Category.  This was a massive achievement considering it is predominantly clubs, not schools who enter this competition.  The routine even received a special commendation from Pat Hawkins, the Head of the UKCA (UK Cheerleading Assocation).

The team is made up of girls from Years 7,8, 9, 10 and Year 11.  They are: Lydia Chin, Sophie Doherty, Holly Marshall, Sophie Godlington, Amiee McColl, Sophie Haigh, Michaela Mattok , Charlotte Carr, Georgina Harris  Polly Carter, Katie Ormerod, , Rebecca, Kellie Furness, Firth, Sarah Porter, Lauren Lister, Megan Wild, India Shibil, Harriet Knibbs, Olivia O’Neil, Rebecca Sabin, Megan Wright, Rovinya Sollitt, Cassie Walker, Gabrielle Capone, Georgia Wilson, Jessica Brearley, Megan Brearley and Laura Wadsworth,

India Shibil and Rebecca Sabin, the team captains will study for their A Levels at The Grammar School and so we look forward to more successes as the girls take part in the advanced competitions next year.
