India, Mr Cook, Mrs Rees, Mark and Tom Wood in front of India's Art Work
Renowned Yorkshire artist Tom Wood was invited back to be guest of honour as Hipperholme Grammar School celebrated the work of its students at the school’s annual Young Artist and Designers exhibition on Wednesday 30th June.
Before the exhibition was opened, Dr John Scarth, Headmaster, welcomed GCSE Art student India Shibil and AS Level Design and Technology student Mark Saville to speak about their enjoyable experience of learning the two subjects. India spoke of how she has grown as an artist since being taught by Grammar School teachers from Year 5 when she was at the Junior School. She said the different Art teachers she has had during her school career have shaped her style. India also talked about the Art trip she enjoyed in Year 10 and described her final exam piece, a cup cake in pop art style to the audience. Mark followed, explaining the curriculum each year of the school follow going on to explain his AS Level exam piece, a jewellery box inspired by the architecture of the iconic London “Gherkin” Building.
Tom Wood, a local artist who has work exhibited in London’s Portrait Gallery, was then invited to speak before cutting the ribbon. He thanked the school for allowing him another opportunity to open such an impressive exhibition. He said it was a delight to be amongst Young Artists again as he enjoys seeing art through a young person’s eyes. “Children see things that adults miss and I love to see their creativity and different ideas. Many artists appreciate the Art of young people, Picasso always said that he wanted to go back to his childhood and tried to reflect this in his art.” Tom also told the audience of an exciting project he was involved with: a large piece of art work that he was working on in collaboration with the Zoology Department of Cambridge University. He finished his speech with a tip to the children, “Always remember the acronym PRESS when you are creating your artwork. P – Pride, R – Reflection, E – Enthusiasm, S – Success and S – Skills.”
Guests were then free to enjoy refreshments whilst browsing the many exhibits on display. Each pupil in Years 7, 8 and 9 had a piece of work on display, GCSE students in Years 10 and 11 studying either Art or Design Technology also showcased their work. Impressive final projects for AS Level Art and AS Level Design and Technology were also on display. Nothing but praise could be heard for the work which included Year 7 Architectural Studies (Art) and Picture Frames (Design), Year 8 Aboriginal paintings and figures and Book Ends (Design), , Year 9 Picasso Style Paintings (Art) and Drinks Can design projects, Year 10 Marine Forms (Art) and Year 11 and Year 12 final projects. Praise must also go to Mrs Rees, Head of Art, and Mr Cook, Head of Design and Technology who worked tirelessly to produce such a professional looking exhibition for the students to proudly display their beautiful work.
