PE at HGJS

Physical Education is taught to ensure that all pupils find enjoyment in physical activity. Children develop a life long interest in sport and this promotes an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Physical Education curriculum promotes the development and understanding of games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming, providing opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals or as team members.

Sports Clubs

At HGJS we run a variety of sports clubs throughout the year.  All clubs are decided by consulting with the children and their parents.
Clubs are held before school, at lunchtime and after school.

Clubs include
> Football
> Rugby
> Netball
> Rounders
> Softball
> Cricket
> Juggling
> Cross Country Running
> Gymnastics
> Dance
> Dodgeball

All team members have the opportunity to play for the school in fixtures against other schools.

Each child has the opportunity to join any club offered by the school.   We have found since offering clubs to children in Reception to Form 6 over the last 2 years that the childrens physical development has improved drastically.   The clubs compliment the work the children do in PE.

Form 6 children have joined a Sports Leader programme and have been coaching (under staff supervision) the younger children. This has helped them to aquire leadership skills and has helped the younger children as they feel they are learning from their peers. The Sports Leaders programme has also fostered a family atmosphere in the school.

Curriculum and Outdoor Pursuits

All children from Nursery to Year 6 have two hours of physical activity
each week as part of their curriculum entitlement.

As part of the curriculum the pupils in Key Stage 2 take part in a programme of
outdoor activities that raise their self esteem, develop their characters and their ability to work as a team.

Sports Day

We all enjoyed a fantastic summerrs day as we watched our children having so much fun as they represented their houses at our Sports Day.
In the morning, assisted by our excellent Form 6 Sports Leaders, Nursery and Reception enjoyed a wide range of activities including: Teddy Bear Relay, an amazing obstacle course complete (to the childrenns delight) with bouncy castle, the Long Jump and traditional favourite, the egg and spoon race. The children received much praise and support for the many proud parents, grandparents and friends who had come to watch.

After a roast beef lunch made to entertain our Italian visitors, Forms 1 to 6 took part in their races and activities.   Round robin activities were organised for the first part of the afternoon: the old favourite the Sack Race, the Obstacle Course incorporating the very popular bouncy castle, long jump, goal scoring, and games to test the childrenns throwing skills.   After the round robin activities it was time to get even more competitive when the running races began.  Each form did a lap around the field and a 100 metre sprint.  It was then time for the last activity of the day the house tug of war!

At the end of the afternoon everyone gathered with nervous excitement in the playground as Mrs Reynolds announced the Sports Day House Champion 2010.   The luckily winners were the Romans for the second consecutive year, well done Romans!

Cross Country

> Every year HGJS organises a cross country which a lot of schools are invited to
> Races are held for all children from reception up to year 6
> All races are fun but still highly competitive
> Prize giving and certificates are handed out at the end of the races
> Al racers enjoyed a meal at the end of the race and a lot stayed to enjoy the day and watch other races

Fixtures

HGJS has an inclusive policy and all children are encouraged to take part in any and every sporting fixture.
We take part in football, netball, rounders, cross country and cricket fixtures throughout the year and have had a number of successes. As a result of the fixtures programme the children are egger to start next year so they can again represent the school.
